Disaster Action Team
Every day, the American Red Cross helps people in emergencies... whether it's half a million disaster victims or one sick child who needs blood. Our vital work is made possible by people like you, who learn how good it can feel to lend a helping hand. Red Cross "everyday heroes" come from all walks of life. They're all ages.
Everyone has something special to offer...Including you.
You’re needed by the Red Cross. . . Right now!
Too busy? The Northern NJ Chapter Red Cross can work with you to provide rewarding experiences, whatever your schedule. Think you don't have any skills to offer? You'd be surprised. And, if you need training, we'll provide it.
We depend on volunteers, who are the majority of our work force, to carry on our humanitarian work:
- Every year, the American Red Cross of Northern New Jersey is there for disaster victims--including over 2,000 children and adults forced from their homes by fire every year, in Essex and Passaic counties alone.
- Each year, more than 15,000 local residents turn to us to learn life saving skills such as first aid, CPR, swimming, and other health and safety skills.
- Among our emergency services for the men and women of the armed forces is the delivery of urgent family messages. Our chapter averages more than six calls a day.
- As part of the International Red Cross Movement, we work to ease human suffering on a global scale.
What is the Disaster Services Human Resource System (DSHR)?
It is the Red Cross Nationwide Human Resource System that provides trained, experienced disaster workers who help you and your neighbors recover from the devastation of a disaster.
How can I be a part of the DSHR? (I don’t have much spare time!)
Here’s the good news! We need you right here in your own back yard. Nobody knows your community better than you do. We will work with you within your available time. All we ask for is the training time plus your commitment of being available one day a week to respond to a disaster operation in your community. It’s completely up to you.
How Do I Become a DSHR Member? (I Don’t Know Anything about Disaster Response.)
That’s easy. Your local Red Cross Chapter provides all the training you need including First Aid and CPR. This is good training for you and your family. All you need is a valid driver’s license, good health and a willingness to be part of the team.
What Do I Get Out of It?
You’ll make new friends, have exciting challenges, truly memorable experiences, make a difference in your community… and have advancement opportunities within the Red Cross. If you have more time available (two to three weeks, usually) your local work experience is recognized and credited to for nationwide opportunities. You become a team member from coast to coast, border to border, and beyond. You decide.
